The Post Publishing Plc took a major step into the media world of the future with the establishment of a new business department, Post Digital, on 1 August 2005, the 59th Anniversary of the Bangkok Post. The Board of Directors decided that the new division was necessary on the grounds that Post Publishing, like other companies in the industry around the world, can no longer regard itself as a newspaper company but must now operate on the basis of being a company in the business of news – in all forms and all formats. The new division, headed by Electronic Media Director Kowit Sanandang, aims to operate in all forms of electronic and digital media, including the Internet, mobile telephones, television, and radio in both English and Thai. Soon after its establishment, Post Digital launched English-language SMS news services. This was in addition to the Thai-language SMS news service launched earlier, in May, through two major mobile phone operators AIS and DTAC. As a result, customers can now receive the latest local and international news alerts via their mobile phones. Both Thai and English news SMS have already attracted a satisfactory subscriber level and the numbers are still growing. In November, Post Digital started introducing breaking news on Bangkok Post (www.bangkokpost.com) and Post Today (Posttoday.com) websites. Bangkok Post's breaking news offers visitors up-to-date, round-the-clock coverage of home and world news to supplement the newspaper's morning news reports. The introduction of breaking news effectively and immediately increased the number of web page views per month from around four million in October to eight million in November. The number of hits also rose from 20 million a month to 40 million. Monthly visits to the website rose to around one million a month in November from around 400,000 visitors. Also in celebration of the Bangkok Post's 60th anniversary as Thailand's leading English-language newspaper , effective 1 January 2006, Post Digital launched a new design for the Bangkok Post website, marking its most complete renovation in three years. The new online edition of the Bangkok Post presents a more modern and sophisticated look. It has also been specially configured to allow better use of modern computer screens, including utilising the entire screen area. In addition, the typefaces have been made easier to read and can quickly be enlarged or reduced, according to reader preference. Another new feature allows readers to print each article or send the text to any e-mail address in the world. The redesign brought in numerous complimentary responses from our online readers while advertising revenue has also benefited. In 2006, Post Digital plans to redesign Post Today website and expand into e-commerce by introducing an online e-paper edition aimed at attracting more overseas subscribers. |
