The Bangkok Post Foundation's contribution to Thai society grew in 2005. The foundation granted 144 scholarships to students from kindergarten to university in 23 provinces, compared to 99 scholarships in 20 provinces in 2004. Of the 144 scholarships, 22 were for students in Ranong Province whose families were victims of the tsunami. This is the result of a special tsunami fund-raising campaign organised by the Bangkok Post. Readers contributed over Baht 600,000. The foundation is committed to supporting this group of students until they complete their education, even if this initial seed money runs out. For 2005, the foundation received about Baht 3.8 million in donations, a portion coming from The Post Publishing Plc itself. The company has contributed one day's circulation revenue to the foundation. In September, the foundation approved a fund of Baht 180,000 to help build a classroom for a kindergarten and the laying of a water system for Ban Saphli (Bangkok Post) Suksa School, in Chumphon. Construction is expected to be completed before the beginning of the new school year in May. The foundation hopes to be able to help up to 200 needy students nationwide in 2006. |
